A Doula is a birth worker who provides person-centered, culturally competent care that supports the racial, ethnic, linguistic, and cultural diversity of beneficiaries while adhering to evidence-based best practices. Doulas aim to prevent perinatal complications and improve health outcomes for birthing parents and infants.
Doulas offer mental, emotional, and physical support before, during, and after childbirth. They provide continuous support for the birthing person as well as their partner or support system.
Studies have shown that the support given by a Birth Doula decreases the likelihood of synthetic oxytocin being used to speed up the labor by 31%, the use of anesthesia by 10%, and the rate of cesarean section by 25%. Furthermore, Birth Doula support has been linked to higher APGAR scores for the baby and a higher rate of satisfaction reported by the birthing person overall. The Cochrane Database Systematic Review, published in July of 2017, went so far as to say “Continuous support in labor may improve a number of outcomes for both mother and baby, and no adverse outcomes have been identified.”
A Midwife is a primary health care provider, while a Doula is a non-medical care provider acting as a childbirth coach. Midwives often replace the role of an OB and deliver babies in various settings.
You can find a Doula providing care at home, at a birth center, and in a hospital.
Yes. If the client already gave birth and did not have a doula during the pregnancy stages, they may hire a doula for postpartum care. The period usually lasts for one year after pregnancy.
